Tiny Dining Behaviors That Have a Huge Impact

Perfect restaurant etiquette often revolves not around the big things but the little things. There are small dining behaviors that can make a meal better and create a more positive impression in the restaurant. Many people might think of formal dining etiquette but often the small everyday things can really make a difference when dining out.

Start Out Well

Arrive a few minutes early. Being on time is a sign of respect for those you are with and the staff. Having a few minutes to get settled and to peruse the menu will mean you’re starting the evening well.

It also starts the meal off well with a less stressful feel to the evening.

Be Present with the People at the Table with You

In the modern etiquette that is expected of the diner, put away your phone. Make eye contact and engage in conversation with those at the table. That shows respect for those at the table with you.

The conversation at the table can be the most memorable part of a meal.

Eat at the Same Pace as Everyone Else

Dining isn’t a race. Eating too fast or too slow can make things uncomfortable at the table.

Eat at a steady, consistent pace so you can enjoy the meal. If you find your food takes a long time to eat, that’s okay, and you can also still enjoy conversation between courses.

Be Thoughtful of Shared Items

When you’re eating shared appetizers or bread baskets or other sharing platters, always use the utensils provided for that purpose. Use appropriate portion sizes, too, and be considerate of how much food is left for others.

These small habits can add up to great dining.

Use Body Language Carefully

Diners should keep good posture, move around and engage with the rest of the table without taking away from the people you’re dining with. Don’t be overly dramatic with your body language, or speak out of turn while other people are eating.

Body language can say a lot without saying a thing, so be thoughtful of that.

Give Thanks and Don’t Forget It

It’s always good practice to thank the restaurant or host. Or, your friends or family you are with. A nice thank you is one of the nicest manners that can be practiced.

Kindness is something people don’t soon forget.

Good Table Etiquette is an Easy Habit to Acquire

Restaurant etiquette is not about following all the rules perfectly. It’s about being considerate and showing respect while helping others feel comfortable and relaxed. Practicing these small habits will mean they’ll become second nature and you will be able to dine comfortably and with grace and ease, at restaurants, or just with friends and family.
